New Catalyst for Biodiesel Production from Castor Oil

Scientists from Brazil performed an experiment to optimize and investigate the biodiesel production from castor oil using microwave-assisted hybrid transesterfication process under various conditions such as microwave power, treatment time, ethanol:oil ratio and catalyst concentration (KOH).

Results showed that under optimal conditions the predicted biodiesel production was found to be 95% with a desirability value of 0.998.


Earth Gen-Biofuel Promotes Use of Castor Bean Oil as a Biofuel Feedstock

Earth Gen-BioFuel has planned to promote the use of castor bean oil in the manufacture of biodiesel. It has planned to sponsor two international castor bean industry symposiums. The first symposium will be in the United States and the second is planned for 37698_earthgenbiofuel-logo-2_0Southeast Asia.

EarthGen plans to expand its own castor bean farming beyond its Laos operation to develop and diversify its growing locations and harvesting dates. In addition to working with the Singapore based consulting group Gionesis, the company has been working with farm operations in Vietnam, Cambodia, Peru and Mexico.


Selective Conversion of Castor Oil Derived Ricinoleic Acid Methyl Ester into Jet Fuel

Recent research shows production of jet fuel from ricinoleic acid methyl ester.

Experiments conducted earlier have shown the possibility of producing jet fuel from Jet-Fuelcastor oil or hydro processing castor oil.

Now scientists from China have found that jet fuel could be produced from castor oil derived ricinoleic acid methyl ester. A unique hydroxyl group in the ricinoleic acid chain induced a special thermal rearrangement reaction in medium chain fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and heptanal formation. This reaction was used as a starting point for the production of jet fuel.

Results showed that the carbon selectivity in the castor oil to jet fuel process was as high as 90%.

Iranian Engineers Develop Bio Refinery for Castor without Need for Fossil-Based Methanol

Scientists from Iran have developed a new method to produce biodiesel from castcastor oil biodieselor oil without using extra petrochemical methanol. The new method uses bio refinery setup where bioethanol is used instead of fossil-based methanol to produce biodiesel.

Results showed that the optimum biodiesel yield was 85% achieved at a temperature of 62.5°C with an ethanol: oil ratio of 0.29:1.

Solvay’s Bio-Based Amorphous PPA for Smart Mobile Devices

Solvay Specialty Polymers,France has recently announced a major extension of its Kalix® high-performance polyamide (HPPA) product line, launching a new portfolio of bio-based high-performance polyamides offered for use in smart mobile devices such as smart phones, tablets, laptops, and other smart mobile electronics.

The introduction includes the Kalix® HPPA 3000 series, the first bio-based amorphous polyphthalamides (PPAs), and the Kalix® 2000 series, a family of bio-sourced semi-crystalline polyamide grades that provide outstanding impact performance. Solvay unveiled the new materials at the 19th International Trade Fair for Plastics and Rubber Worldwide, which was held on Oct. 16-23, in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Both the 2000 and 3000 series contain monomers that come from the sebacic acid chain which is derived from non-food competing and GMO-free castor oil.

Rigid foam polyurethane derived from castor oil for thermal insulation in roof systems

Paper Abstract

This paper discusses the response of the thermal insulation lining of rigid foam polyurethane (PU) derived from castor oil (Ricinus communis) in heat conditions, based on dynamic climate approach. Liners have been widely used, because the coverage of buildings is responsible for the greatest absorption of heat by radiation, but the use of PU foam derived from this vegetable oil is unprecedented and has the advantage of being biodegradable and renewable. The hot wire parallel method provided the thermal conductivity value of the foam. The thermogravimetric analysis enabled the study of the foam decomposition and its lifetime by kinetic evaluation that involves the decomposition process. The PU foam thermal behavior analysis was performed by collecting experimental data of internal surface temperature measured by thermocouples and assessed by representative episode of the climatic fact. The results lead to the conclusion that the PU foam derived from castor oil can be applied to thermal insulation of roof systems and is an environmentally friendly material.

Extraction and Characterization of Drilling Fluid from Castor Oil

Research Article – Drilling fluid is an essential component in drilling operations. It is used to prevent blowouts by creating adequate hydrostatic pressure, lubricating the walls of a well and the drill string, flushing to the surface of cuttings, and keeping the drill bit clean and cool. Extraction, characterization and formation of drilling fluid from castor seed oil were investigated. The castor seeds used were obtained from a local market and the extraction of the oil was done mechanically. The extracted oil characteristics such as specific gravity, pH, acid value, iodine value, saponification value, refractive index and viscosity were within the standard range before before formulating it to drilling fluid by the addition of additives. The result of the formulation obtained showed that the formulated drilling fluid had an electrical stability of 222 V, High Pressure/High Temperature of 8.8, mass funnel viscosity at 30 and 50 oC were 26.5 and 25 s, respectively; chemical alkalinity was 0.3 and excess lime of 0.39 Ib/bbI. The findings in this research have shown that formulated drilling fluid from castor seed oil is safe as drilling fluid and has characteristics close to that of the standard drilling mud equivalent circulating density 99. The formulated drilling fluid can adequately serve as an alternative to the commercial products.
