Thickening Properties of Several NCO-Functionalized Cellulose Derivatives in Castor Oil

Researchers from Spain performed an experiment to analyze the thickening properties of NCO-functionalized cellulose derivatives in castor oil. Cellulose derivatives were initially functionalized with NCO and subsequently dispersed in castor oil to form oleogels. The oleogels were rheologically investigated and gel microstroleogelsucture was determined.

Results showed that cellulose derivatives after NCO functionalization showed reduced thermal resistance but the oleogels showed increased thermal resistance. The difference in rheological properties is based on the balance between polar and non-polar groups in the biopolymer structure and the size of these substituents.

Of the three kinds of imidazolium ionic liquids, EMIMPF6 exhibited the highest ethyl ferulate conversion and showed excellent reaction selectivity for lipophilic castor oil based feruloylated mono- and di-acylglycerols (FMAGs and FDAGs) formation.

$62.7 million Sebacic Acid Project to come up in Duqm

A first-of-its-kind Sebacic acid production plant is planned to be built in DuqSebacic acidm Special Economic Zone with an investment of $62.7 million and the chairman of the Special Economic Zone Authority at Duqm (SEZAD) and the representatives of Sebacic Acid Oman Company have signed an agreement.

The plant will be spread over 400,000 square meters of land and will be the first-of-its-kind in the Middle East.

Arkema Launches Polyamide Processed from Castor Oil

ArkemaArkema has launched a new biosourced polyamide 6.10 range called Rilan S, partially processed from castor oil. The polyamide has been manufactured at Arkema’s Zhangjiagang facility in China

Rilan S is an alternative to long-chain polyamides and PA6/PA6.6; it closes the gap between long-chain polyamides and PA6/PA6.6. The various Rilan S grades already available find applications in the field of transport, sports and electronics.

Biocompatibility and Osteogenesis of the Castor Bean Polymer Doped with Silica (SiO2) or Barium Titanate (BaTiO3) Nanoparticles

Scientists from Brazil conducted an experiment to evaluate the biocompatibility and osteogenesis of castor oil polymer doped with SiO2 or BaTiO3 nanoparCastoroil polymerticles.

Twenty-four rats with bone defect were experimented with castor oil polymer doped with SiO2 or BaTiO3. Euthanasia occurred 30 and 60 days after surgery and the femurs were sent to histological analysis and MEV. Results showed that the implants were biocompatible and allowed for progressive osteogenesis.  Thus, castor oil polymer doped with SiO2 or BaTiO3 remains biocompatible and allows for osteogenesis.

Effect of Chlorinated Phosphate Ester Based on Castor Oil on Thermal Degradation of Poly (Vinyl Chloride) Blends and its Flame Retardant Mechanism as Secondary Plasticizer

Scientists from China conducted an experiment to analyze the effect of castor oil based chlorinated phosphate ester on thermal degradation of PVC. A novel flame rPVCetardant chlorinated phosphate ester based on castor oil (CPECO) was synthesized. Its chemical structure was characterised with FTIR and NMR.

Application of CPECO as a secondary plasticizer for PVC gained satisfied flame retardancy and substituted for dioctyl phthalate (DOP) partly. Increase in PVC blends was observed. The flame retardant mechanism showed that phosphorus containing generated from the pyrolysis of CPECO   could promote char residual.
