Castor seed prices rebounded by Rs 34 to Rs 4,470 per quintal in futures trading today on improved industrial demand.
At the National Commodity and Derivative Exchange, castor seed for most-traded, delivery in August month gained Rs 34 or 0.77 per cent to Rs 4,470 per quintal, having an open interest of 74,470 lots.
The castor seed for delivery in September advanced by Rs 33 or 0.73 per cent to Rs 4,540 per quintal, clocking an open interest of 13,760 lots.
The Jamaican Castor Oil Industry is working with Jampro to tap into the growing market for Jamaican black castor oil and commercial grade castor oil which has a prospective value for US$ 100 milion or more.
Recently, the two entities organised a workshop focused on mechanised processes for castor oil, meant to position processors to reliably supply foreign markets.

Port of Duqm has received the first containers from French shipping giant CMA CGM via the Oman Express Service operated by Oman Shipping Company through its subsidiary Oman Container Line.
The containers, which were loaded with project equipment for Sebacic Oman SAOC, soon to become the world’s largest Sebacic Acid plant in Duqm, originated from China and were transshipped via another regional port.
Port of Duqm received the containers at its early container terminal, from where they will be delivered to Sebacic Oman’s site.
Castor seed prices rose further by Rs 56 to Rs 4,537 per quintal in futures trading after participants expanded positions amid positive trend at the physical markets.
At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, castor seed for August surged by Rs 56, or 1.25 per cent, to Rs 4,537 per quintal, with an open interest of 81,850 lots.
The delivery for July also rose by Rs 37, or 0.83 per cent, to Rs 4,470 per quintal, in an open interest of 6,660 lots.
Castor oil has been in use since long and still finds increasing applications in various industries. The prominent applications of castor oil include cosmetics, soaps, textiles, medicines and more. It has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and moisturizing properties. It can be used orally as well as topically.

Scientists from University of Hyderabad, India have found that castor bean plants could help in remediation of areas where soil has been highly polluted with heavy metals due to industrial pollution.
Castor plants growing in these areas absorb toxic heavy metals from soil. Hence, castor bean plants can be grown in such polluted lands and over a period of time the levels of heavy metals can be reduced in the soil.
Research reports stated that when the castor bean plants growing in industrial areas were tested, roots of the plants were seen to contain lead in as high as 19.53 milligrams per gram of the root. Even leaves and stem of the plant were found to be containing lead but in smaller quantities.
