Biobased PA 6.10 Compounds Added to Portfolio of BioFed

German biodegradable and biobased plastics producer Bio-Fed  has added renewable resource-based polyamide compounds, the “MVera ECS” products, to its portfolio. The main focus of Bio-Fed is on compostable and biodegradable plastic compounds for film applications as well as injection

The new PA 6.10 fulfils the standard definition of a bioplastic since it is made up of approximately 60% renewable resources. Castor oil, derived from the seeds of the plant Ricinuns communis, forms the basis of sebacic acid, which is the product’s renewable raw material content.


Arkema to Invest in New Bio-based Nylon Production

Arkema has planned to invest 300 million euros for expansion of its bio sourced nylon 11 production in Asia. By establishing this plant, the company would increase the global production of bio sourced nylon 11 by 50%.Logotype_arkema

The new plant, which will produce both the amino 11 monomer and its polymer, is expected to come on stream in late 2021. The products to be produced would find applications in electronics, 3D printing and automotive industries.


Arkema Celebrates 70th Anniversary of Bio-based Nylon

Arkema group celebrated 70th anniversary of its flagship product Rilsan nylon 11 series of high performance polymers. Rilsan PA 11 is sourced from castor oil and is a bio-based member of the nylon family.Logotype_arkema

Nylon 11 made its market debut under the brand name Rilsan in 1949 and was taken up by automaker Citroën in 1950s as new plastic for fuel lines. Arkema produces the material at its sites in Serquigny, France, Birdsboro, Pa.,  and  Zhengjiagang, China.


Fulgar Develops Castor Oil-Based Fibre

Italian synthetic fibre business Fulgar has launched a new high performance nylon fibreFulgar made from biopolymer extracted from castor oil seed.

The fibre, Evo, is suitable for all applications, particularly, for the sports sector as it is ultra-light, stretchy and easily breathable.


Growing Castor Oil Industry

Castor oil manufacturing is similar to that of other oil seeds and hence it can be manufactured by utilizing the existing equipments that are locally available. The castor seeds contain about 48 – 50% oil by weight. After extraction, the oil can be further processed to get a number of derivatives which can be used in various industrial applications. The average seed yields range from 900 – 1000 kg/ha under irrigation.

Castor oil, is not only as a lubricant, but also play a vital role in the polymer industry as it is gives polyamide-nylon 11.

The global market for generation II castor oil derivatives is estimated at about $300 million. Some of the high yielding varieties of castor oil in India are NPH-1 (Aruna), GAUCH-4 and TMVCH.

Microorganisms for Bio-Based Nylon Intermediates

Genomatic, a U.S. Biotech company, bacteriahas planned to develop technologies for the production of bio-based nylon intermediates- hexamethylenediamine, caprolactam and adipic acid. Approximately, revenue of $18 billion is bagged by these three chemicals every year.

The company has been involved in a several experiments, to study the

production of nylon intermediates by various microorganisms. The research team of Genomatic is basically trying to demonstrate the metabolic pathways, efficient methods of production and recovery of these intermediates. Source

BASF Now Offers Bio-based Nylon for Textiles

German chemical giant BASF has said it will now offer its bio-based nylon, which is derived from castor oil, in a version suitable for monofilament applications that can be used for textile fibres. Castor oil based sebacic acid is used to produce the company’s Ultramid® S Balance.

The high performance polyamide 6.10, partly based on renewable resources, is available in various viscosities. In compounded and glass-fiber reinforced versions, BASF has already introduced the material in different commercial applications, e.g. in a design lamp or automotive quick connectors.

Castor Bean Plant – An Important Source for Bio based Flooring

This post at briefs a few excerpts from an article at the Contract Flooring Journal, which was narrated on biobased flooring. The author explains his experience at Ecobuild, which is one of the world’s biggest events for sustainable design, construction and the built environment and presents interesting insights on biobased flooring and sustainability.

The author sees castor bean plant as one of the most important plant sources of bio-chemicals. Some of the companies using castor based flooring products, which exhibited at the show include :

  • Interface- Fotosfera ( Offers two pile weight micro tufted or pattern loop carpet tile products which features nylon 6:10 pile of which 63% is castor oil based)
  • Vorwerk (Offers ‘RE/COVER green’ which is a bio chemical based resilient florring targetted at the vinyl flooring market)

The author also brings his views on Desso, a company which makes its products, using the concept of “CRADLE TO CRADLE” – ( A biomimetic approach to the design of products and systems) Desso has partnered with Aquafil nylon recycling facility and manufactures Econyl, a 100% recycled yarn in 60% of its carpet tile range. Desso has also developed its equipment and capability to process more than 3000 tonnes of used carpet material through its Take Back Programme.
