Synthesis and Characterization of Acrylated Epoxidized Castor Oil Nanocomposites

Scientists from India synthesized a renewable resource based epoxidized castorCastor plant oil (ECO) and used it as a prime material to develop acrylated epoxidized castor oil (AECO) networks. AECO nanocomposites were prepared by sol-gel method using OMMT clay and silane.

The results showed that AECO/1 wt.% OMMT system increases in tensile strength from 28 to 37 MPa and flexural strength from 54 to 63 MPa as compared with the AECO system, respectively.

BKS Seeks Support Price for Castor Seeds

BKS, an RSS affiliated farmers’ group have urged the centre to institute a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs. 60,000/tonne for castor seeds.Castor Seeds

The cost of cultivating castor is estimated at Rs. 6000 – 7000/quintal. In the last two months, the castor cultivation prices have dropped from Rs. 4000 to Rs. 3600/-. Such low prices export sales depress the castor seed prices and also affect the castor seed growers who are denied remunerative returns. The group has also sent a letter stating the estimates of farmers’ losses due to non-procurement of food grains and damage from rain.

Preparation and Properties of Waterborne Bio-based Polyurethane/Siloxane Cross-Linked Films by an in situ Sol–gel Process

Scientists from China prepared waterborne castor oil -based polyurethane –sCastor oililica hybrid materials with chemically bonded polymer matrix and silica nanoparticles.  The formation of the cross-linking structures in the polyurethane system was confirmed by FTIR.

The results showed that the nano-silica in the polyurethane matrix improved both hydrophobicity and thermal stability of the resulting hybrid polyurethane films. Thus this process can help in the design of bio-based hydrophobic waterborne polyurethane films with favourable thermal stability and optical transmittance.

Synthesis of Castor Oil Based Plasticizers Containing Flame Retarded Group and their Application in Poly (Vinyl Chloride) as Secondary Plasticizer

A team of researchers from China have conducted an experiment to synthesize castor oil based plasticizers containing flame retarded group and their use in poly vinyl chlorPlasticizerside as a secondary plasticizer. Initially epoxidized castor oil (ECO) and castor oil phosphate ester (COPE) were synthesized and their structure was characterized. The property of PVC blends plasticized with ECO and COPE as a secondary plasticizer was studied.

The results showed that the thermal stability of plasticized PVC blends was improved; the flame retardant performance of COPE was put into effect by promoting polymer carbonization and forming a consolidated and thick flame retardant coating.
